We’ve transported some unusual consignments during our 50 years in the industry, but when a group of children asked us to help move a giraffe, a dolphin, and a giant fish, we jumped at the chance to help.
The project was part of a major sustainability initiative led by young people in Corby, who rallied their communities to think innovatively about reducing and recycling plastic waste, supporting sustainability and protecting the local environment. Sanderson Transport was keen to play its part too, helping transport three giant sculptures to local schools, which were used to collect and transform plastic waste, each sending a powerful message about protection of our wildlife habitats.
Supported by the Corby community, the project involved students from Exeter School, Woodnewton and Priors Hall schools in Corby. The three schools are members of IFtL (Inspiring Future through Leaning), a multi-academy Trust comprising 16 schools across Corby and Milton Keynes. Each year, the IFtL appoints students from each school to represent them on a Youth Parliament. The parliament hopes to give children a voice in their local community and help inspire them to be part of driving positive change.
Time to take action
This year, the Youth Parliament decided it was time to act on reducing plastic waste, with a huge recycling project aimed to unite the whole community in caring for the surrounding environment and supporting Corby’s future as a low-carbon, circular economy.
Thinking creatively about a better future
Collection points were set up at each school for the waste, but instead of using bags and bins the children had a better, and more creative solution, that delivered a powerful message. The British Ironworks Centre, based in Oswestry, led a project to design and build three giant mesh sculptures – Geoffrey the giraffe, Donna the dolphin and Coral the fish, which became containers for the waste.
When it came to transporting these unusual sculptures, Sanderson was ready to get involved and provide the solution, ensuring the giraffe, dolphin and fish safely made their way from Oswestry to each school. The Centre is passionate about inspiring creative ideas that support sustainability and recycling, and it runs an Environmental Project designed to educate and inspire young people to think innovatively about protecting the environment.
“Sanderson Transport’s help was invaluable, as it would not have been possible to complete this task without their support, so we thank them enormously. All children in schools were so positively engaged and in turn, encouraged their families with supporting this project and making a real difference to where our rubbish goes. We are committed to educating both our pupils and the wider local communities about the importance of sustainability and being responsible citizens even beyond the classrooms."

“We thoroughly enjoyed being part of this sustainability initiative. It’s not every day you get asked to collect two fish and a giraffe from the British Iron Works Centre in Wales! So, when we did, we jumped at the chance of getting involved. As a local employer, we enjoy supporting the community of which we’re part. We’re committed to working towards a more sustainable future and lessening our own impact on the environment, and it is important we play an active role in the sustainability of the area."
